"We Margiela tells the untold and intimate story of the enigmatic and singular fashion house Maison Martin Margiela. For the first time co-founder Jenny Meirens and members of the creative team that formed the heart of the house speak about the creative processes and unique philosophy of Margiela. Their stories, told through detailed and intimate interviews, give unprecedented insight into the genesis of one of the most influential fashion houses of our time. The film investigates the legacy of Margiela and its relevance for fashion and authorship today." - Mint Film Office
'We Margiela' is the first documentary to focus on the impactful Parisian designer.
The documentary premiered in 2017 to critical acclaim from renowned institutions like the MoMu in Antwerp and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. It's gained international coverage and highlights from numerous fashion publications, including Vogue, W magazine and AnotherMag, as a must-see fashion film.
THE CANADIAN PREMIERE
This premiere marks just the third screening in North America, after a US premiere at FIT in New York and a Mexican premiere at the Museo Rufino Tamayo.
Archival Toronto announced the event through an ad in the Toronto Star's Classified on September 20, 2018. We wanted to pay homage to Martin Margiela when he announced his AW89-90 show in Paris.
As a start-up focused on making contemporary fashion history accessible to Toronto, we're proud to present this fantastic film that captures the legacy of one of the most influential fashion houses of all time. A brand that is constantly shrouded in mystery and yet has left an indelible mark on how we perceive the line between fashion and art.
It gives a rare backstage glimpse into the inner workings of Maison Margiela and catalogues its struggles and success beautifully and intimately.
We hope that by sharing this film, we can inspire a new generation of designers and creatives who will continue to push boundaries and develop their vision.
WITH YOUR SUPPORT
We can make more events like this possible.
We are actively moving towards bringing more relevant fashion experiences to Toronto that go beyond our signature pop-up shops and galleries.
We want to make future screenings of We Margiela available and bring more documentaries and other resources to Toronto, and this is our first step to making this dream a reality.
The Fox Theatre is one of the oldest independent cinemas in Toronto. Located at the iconic Beaches neighbourhood, we chose a location that will create the best viewing experience for We Margiela. The Fox Theatre is classically beautiful, evokes a sense of nostalgia and an appreciation for vintage.
